2018 Midwest Regional Meeting

Undergraduate and Younger Chemists Program

The 2018 Midwest Regional ACS Meeting has a great program for undergraduates and younger chemists. The program has been planned by two energetic groups - the Student Affiliate Group from Drake University, and the Younger Chemists Committee for the Ames Local Section at Iowa State. Check out all the activities!

Technical program

Over 100 posters have been submitted by undergraduate research students. There will be undergraduate research posters all day on Monday, October 22 and during the morning of October 23. Click here for a listing of titles of the various posters at these three sessions.

Demo and outreach swap

On Sunday afternoon, October 21, we will hold a demonstration and outreach swap. Many undergraduate groups participate in demo shows, or have hands-on outreach activities. This is a great chance to talk with other groups about their best, and most popular, shows and activities. Bring your great ideas to share, and go home with cool new activities to plan at your upcoming outreach events. Or - just come and learn from others about what they have been doing. Everybody is welcome to enjoy this event.

Career Services and ACS on Campus

There's several interesting activities on Monday, October 22, for undergraduates through the Career Services Program. Click here to see them.

In addition to Career Services, ACS on Campus will join us on Tuesday, October 23, with more great programming for undergraduates and younger chemists. Click here to check out that program.

Chemistry Department Tours and Glass Shop Demonstrations

If you arrive prior to the Demo and outreach swap, take advantage of your time and get a tour of the research labs and instrumentation facilities in the chemistry department at Iowa State. Tours will be scheduled from noon - 2 PM. During this time, the Glass Shop will be open and glassblowers from both Iowa State and the University of Iowa will be on hand to show you how glassblowing contributes to the research endeavor in chemistry - and they'll make some fun glass pieces as well. Plenty of interesting things to do on Sunday afternoon.

Pub trivia night

For a chance to have some fun networking with other younger chemists in the Midwest Region, join us at the West Towne Pub, in Ames for a Pub Trivia Night on Sunday evening. Registration provides the resources for prizes, so in addition to epic bragging rights for the winners, there's also the chance to snag great winners circle awards.

Younger Chemists Luncheon

On Monday, October 22, we will have the Younger Chemists (YCC) luncheon. We have a fascinating speaker at the luncheon, Teresa Waldof. Ms. Waldof will give a talk called, "Code Name - Quik-Phix: Dr. Wilhelm, the Manhattan Project and the Secret Work of Ames Lab". This talk will highlight the role played by Dr. Wilhelm in the production of uranium metal (from its oxide) during the Manhattan project. Tickets are going fast for this event.
